Save the Hyatt Regency African Penguin Program
The Hyatt Regency in Maui, Hawaii, is making an urgent plea to help save their African Penguin program. The Hyatt has been educating and enriching lives with their penguin program free of charge for over 40 years. Now, they are making a final bid to the Hawaii Board of Agriculture to continue their penguin program.
The Hyatt Regency Bird Team is asking for people to call in and show their support for the program during the Board of Agriculture Meeting on Tuesday, January 28th 9am HST / 12 PM MST. They especially would like to hear from students and educators willing to share stories about their penguins and the role the Hyatt plays in saving species and creating life long conservationists. The first step to saving the penguins is getting people to care, and the Hyatt has been achieving this for many decades.

From the Hyatt Regency Bird Team:
We focus on animals because our mission to save them from extinction is worthy and valuable. Hyatt partners with neighborhood organizations to host community events such as World Penguin Day, World Ocean Day, Earth Day and more. We also welcome middle and high school student volunteers to help, giving kids the opportunity to have hands-on experience in promoting conservation and public education.
Only 1% of the original African Penguin population remains, and at this rate they could be functionally extinct by 2035. We have a unique opportunity to help save African Penguins from the brink of extinction, but only if we are granted a permit that allows us to responsibly breed our genetically unique penguins with another genetically unique bloodline. We can't allow African Penguins to go extinct on our watch.
It is animal by animal that we save a species. Conservation is the foundation for our penguin program. Hyatt donates yearly to SANCCOB, Penguins International, and Dyer Island Conservation Trust to help save wild populations of African penguins and promote education to our guests and community alike. We have a dedicated care team that is passionate about the care and welfare of our penguins; our focus is to give them the most complete life possible, which includes the opportunity to be parents. Our window of opportunity is closing due to the age of our penguins- we only have one chance to save our penguin population before it fades away.
